Why I Started Breakwater Safety & Compliance

Small businesses have enough to worry about.

Serving customers, managing employees, controlling costs, meeting deadlines, and simply keeping the doors open can consume nearly every hour of the day. Workplace safety and regulatory compliance matter, but for many small and growing businesses, having a full-time Environmental, Health & Safety professional simply isn't practical.

That's one of the reasons I created Breakwater Safety & Compliance.

Bringing Big-Company EHS Experience to Small Business

My name is Fred Hein, MS, CSP, founder of Breakwater Safety & Compliance.

I've spent more than 13 years working in Environmental, Health & Safety across a variety of industries and organizations—from manufacturing and distribution to large-scale operations and highly regulated environments.

Throughout my career, I've seen what strong safety and compliance programs can accomplish. I've also seen what happens when organizations have gaps they didn't realize existed.

And that's an important distinction.

Most business owners aren't intentionally ignoring safety or compliance requirements. In many cases, they simply don't know what they don't know.

OSHA requirements, employee training, written programs, environmental regulations, emergency planning, documentation, inspections, and other compliance obligations can quickly become complicated—especially when safety isn't someone's full-time job.

Safety Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

A safety program shouldn't be a four-inch binder sitting on a shelf collecting dust.

It should actually work.

The goal is to identify the hazards that matter, understand the requirements that apply to your operation, put practical controls in place, train your employees, and maintain the documentation necessary to demonstrate that you're doing things correctly.

That's where Breakwater comes in.

I created Breakwater Safety & Compliance to provide businesses with access to experienced EHS support without requiring them to hire a full-time safety professional.

Depending on the needs of the organization, that can include workplace assessments, written safety programs, employee training, compliance audits, inspections, corrective-action support, environmental compliance assistance, and ongoing EHS guidance.

Protecting People Comes First

Compliance is important. OSHA citations, regulatory penalties, workers' compensation costs, operational disruptions, and liability are all legitimate business concerns.

But those aren't the primary reason safety matters.

At the end of the day, employees should be able to come to work, do their jobs safely, and go home to their families.

Good safety programs protect people first.

And when they're designed correctly, they also protect the business.

Breakwater Safety & Compliance was created with a particular focus on helping small and growing businesses that may not have their own dedicated EHS department.

Contractors, construction companies, manufacturers, warehouses, marine operations, service businesses, and other employers can all face safety and compliance requirements that aren't always obvious from the outside.

My role isn't to walk into a business looking for everything that's wrong.

It's to help owners and managers understand where they are today, where their potential gaps are, and what practical steps they can take to improve.

Sometimes that's a comprehensive assessment.

Sometimes it's developing a required program or conducting employee training.

And sometimes it's simply having an experienced safety professional available to answer a question before a small issue becomes a much larger one.
